MIRI: The existence of 66 registered homestays in Bario reflect the strong commitment of the local community to empowering community-based tourism in the highland area.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, said the participation demonstrates the residents’ determination to leverage tourism as a new source of income.

“Homestays play an important role in promoting the unique culture, customs and way of life of the Kelabit community to visitors, while generating income through accommodation, traditional food and cultural activities,” he said during a meeting with the Bario Highlands Homestay Association at the Mulu Service Centre recently.

During the meeting, a proposal to organise the Bario Highlands Homestay Festival was also discussed as a platform to strengthen the promotion of Bario as a community-based tourism destination.

Gerawat, who is Mulu assemblyman, emphasised that the government remains committed to supporting rural tourism development, reminding homestay operators to maintain standards of service, cleanliness and safety.
