SIMUNJAN: A tree-planting programme involving 35 students from Gifu High School, Japan, was held at the Sabal Forest Reserve, marking growing international collaboration in support of Sarawak’s environmental conservation efforts under the ‘Greening Sarawak’ Campaign.
The programme brought together about 60 participants, including students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and members of the local community.
It was organised through collaboration between the Forest Department Sarawak, the Japan Malaysia Association, and Insar Tours & Travel.
During the activity, a total of 360 seedlings of native tree species were planted, including lun, kapur bukit and engkabang jantong.
The participation of Japanese students reflects growing international engagement in Sarawak’s conservation initiatives and promotes cultural exchange and environmental awareness among youth.
The programme also provided participants with hands-on experience in forest landscape restoration and a greater appreciation of Sarawak’s forest ecosystems and natural heritage.
The initiative supports the state government’s ‘Greening Sarawak’ Campaign, which aims to increase green coverage, strengthen ecosystem resilience, and encourage wider participation from communities, institutions and international partners in conservation efforts.
