SIBU: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch has initiated an infrastructure improvement project at Jalan Hua Lai and Jalan Hock Ming, West Bank here involving the installation of culverts to enhance the local drainage system and alleviate long-standing flooding issues faced by residents.
It was noted that the affected roads have long been battling poor drainage, resulting in frequent flooding during heavy rainfall.
Bawang Assan Branch Chairman, Cr Kevin Lau Kor Jie, who made the site inspection on Wednesday (Mar 18), said the flood has not only disrupted traffic but also caused inconvenience to the daily lives of nearby residents.
Through the active assistance and feedback from local community leader, Kapitan Tang Chuo Ging, he pointed out that the issue was brought to attention and subsequently included in the improvement plan.
Stating that the project is being implemented by the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), he said the culvert installation works officially commenced on Wednesday.
Upon completion, he said the project is expected to significantly improve wastewater discharge and overall drainage efficiency, thereby reducing the occurrence of flooding in the area.
“I wish to express my appreciation, particularly commending the swift action taken by the SRDC, as well as Kapitan Tang for his efforts in highlighting and coordinating the community’s concerns.
“Such infrastructure upgrades are crucial in improving the living environment and quality of life for residents, and I affirm that similar community issues will continue to be addressed to ensure the well-being of the people,” added Lau, who is also SUPP Youth Chairman.
