Asajaya Unity Cup fosters grassroots football spirit

ASAJAYA: The 58th edition of the Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah Asajaya Unity Cup Football Tournament 2026 continues to hold deep significance in fostering unity and grassroots football development.

Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) secretary-general Datuk Abdullah Julaihi said the efforts by the Sambir Bistari Football Club (KBSB) in managing the tournament were seen as a step towards continuing the legacy of unity.

He added that the tournament also enhanced the festive spirit of Hari Raya celebrations, not only in Kampung Sambir but throughout the Asajaya constituency.

“What we see is that this tournament provides the best platform to foster cooperation, develop the talents of young people, and strengthen bonds between all parties,” said Abdullah after the tournament’s opening ceremony at the Kampung Sambir football field today (Mar 23).

Also present were Gedong District Officer Jemain Wahab, tournament chairman Jalek Jaafar, and local community leaders.

The prestigious competition kicked off today, marking the start of the quest for the championship among 50 teams representing various clubs.

Several matches were played, with the Tabau Legasi team, composed entirely of players from the Samarahan Sarawak Premier Cup 2026 squad, drawing significant attention.

The selected squad recorded a resounding 6-0 victory over KB JR to advance to the second round.

PAMA FC ‘A’ also secured a spot in the second round with a 5-0 win against Akademi Tambirat, while Legasi Muara Tebas advanced after defeating Pomchai 2-0.

Latif FC followed with a comfortable 5-0 victory over Rebak JR, and another Akademi Tambirat team recorded a 4-2 win against Sebandi Lot 1.

Earlier, Abdullah, who is also a patron of KBSB, expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED), its minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and Lea Sports Centre (LSC) for their support and collaboration in making the tournament a success.
