LONDON, England: Fernando Alonso will arrive late for this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka for “personal family reasons”, reported PA Media/dpa.

The 44-year-old two-time former world champion’s partner, Melissa Jimenez, is due to give birth to their first child this month.

His team, Aston Martin, posted on the social media platform X: “Fernando is arriving slightly later this weekend for personal family reasons and won’t be attending media day at the Japanese Grand Prix. All is well and he will be at the track in time for Friday.”

Aston Martin have had a disappointing start to the new season due to major problems with their Honda engine and sit last in the constructors’ standings after the first two races.

Alonso, world champion in 2005 and 2006, retired in both Australia and China, while team-mate Lance Stroll finished last in Melbourne and also failed to finish in Shanghai. – BERNAMA-PA MEDIA/dpa
