MIRI: The Miri branch of Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) has returned Simon Ilus as chairman for a second term, following an uncontested election at its triennial general meeting on Mar 28.

The meeting, held at the Imperial Palace Hotel here, appointed the new executive committee (exco) that blends experienced incumbents with first-time members, signalling both continuity and renewal within the organisation.

Simon, who was elected unopposed, will lead the association through the 2026-2028 term alongside deputy chairman Christopher Narang. Caroline Siburat was named secretary, with Angeline Jom as assistant secretary. Nancy Roba Ribid takes on the role of treasurer, supported by assistant treasurer Augustine Albert Rundim.

The broader executive line-up includes Christopher Laksmanie David Madek, Albert Jeris, Trisha Camilla Joe, Melissa Alecia Pitos, Tania Angelina Derek, Roger Hassan and Ian Shepherd Salang. Romionson Midun was appointed as advisor, while Erick Lingkong and Jimmy Hendrick Kijon will serve as internal auditors.

The event was officiated by Beluru District Officer Charles Aloysius Lisu, who underscored the importance of leadership continuity and community cohesion.

In his address, he commended the association’s ongoing efforts to preserve Bidayuh cultural heritage and strengthen grassroots engagement, while urging broader membership participation.

“The association plays a critical role in ensuring cultural continuity and inclusive development within the community,” he said, calling for sustained outreach to encourage more Bidayuh participation in its programmes.

The newly elected committee assumes office at a time when community-based organisations are under increasing pressure to remain relevant amid changing socio-economic conditions. DBNA Miri said its renewed leadership would prioritise cultural preservation, youth engagement and targeted socio-economic initiatives across Miri and surrounding areas.

In a statement, the association said the composition of the new exco reflects “a strong spirit of cooperation and shared purpose”, combining institutional knowledge with fresh perspectives.
