SIBU: A total of 15 streetlights have been installed across three longhouse areas in Rantau Panjang here to enhance nighttime safety in the community.
The three longhouses are Rh Franky Bawok, Rh Peter Dana (formerly known as Rh Chinda Angkob), and Rh Suria Mat.
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch chairman, Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie, led a team yesterday (Mar 30) on a site visit to inspect the implementation of the project and to gather feedback from residents regarding the newly installed streetlights.
Lau, who is also SUPP Youth Chief revealed that the project was carried out by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) under the Bawang Assan Special rural tranformation project (RTP) fund, with the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC)’s engineering department overseeing its execution.
“Previously, residents from Rh Franky, Rh Peter, and Rh Suria had raised concerns about insufficient lighting along certain stretches of road at night. The dim conditions posed safety risks to both the community and road users.
“Through coordination and applications from various parties, funding was successfully secured to install 15 streetlights across these three longhouse areas. The project has now been completed smoothly by SEB’s Sibu team,” he stated.
Lau added that although streetlight facilities may seem simple, they play a crucial role in improving nighttime safety and providing peace of mind for residents.
He also called on residents of the three longhouse areas to work together with relevant authorities to maintain public facilities and prevent vandalism, ensuring that these improvements continue to benefit the community in the long term.
