KUCHING: A pilot reading programme by HWPL Malaysia aimed at improving children’s literacy and fostering unity was launched at The Salvation Army on March 28.
The session, conducted in small groups, saw tutors guiding children through reading activities to enhance vocabulary, pronunciation and confidence.
The organisers said early improvements were observed as participants became more comfortable and expressive in reading aloud.
Following the encouraging response, HWPL Malaysia plans to expand the programme to reach more communities and provide continued access to structured reading support.
Beyond literacy development, the initiative also seeks to promote unity by creating inclusive learning spaces for children from diverse backgrounds.
It further encourages appreciation of local heritage by introducing reading materials in indigenous and local languages such as Bidayuh, Iban and other native dialects.
Writers, educators, and community members have been invited to contribute reading materials, particularly in mother-tongue languages, to support both learning and the preservation of cultural identity.
HWPL Malaysia also welcomed collaboration with educational institutions, community organisations and cultural groups to broaden the programme’s reach.
The initiative supports Malaysia’s National Reading Decade 2021–2030 under the Ministry of Education, which aims to cultivate a strong reading culture nationwide.
