BETONG: A RM16-million replica of the historic Rentap fortress at Bukit Sadok is set to transform Betong into a key heritage tourism destination, with authorities projecting a strong boost to local economic activity and visitor arrivals.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the initiative is expected to bring significant benefits to nearby residents through increased tourist arrivals and broader economic opportunities.

According to him, elected representatives in the Betong area are continuously working to develop new initiatives to attract visitors from outside the region.

“The construction of this Rentap fortress replica will benefit the people, especially the local community. We are striving to create an element that can attract outsiders to come to Betong,” he said.

He made these remarks during the ground-breaking ceremony and site handover for the proposed construction of the Rentap fortress replica with supporting facilities at Bukit Sadok on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Uggah, who is also the Bukit Saban assemblyman, emphasised that the tourism sector is one of the main drivers in strengthening the community’s economy through business opportunities and job creation.

He also shared that the project will be developed based on the design of the original fort, incorporating traditional longhouse-inspired elements along with supporting facilities.

The replica will include 10 chalet units equipped with pantry and bathroom facilities, as well as traditional features such as tanju, panggau, ruai, tempuan, and an information centre.

He noted that this first phase of development is an important step in introducing Bukit Sadok to outside visitors, while enhancing its historical value and overall appeal.

The construction of the fortress replica began on March 24 and is expected to be completed by March 28, 2028.

In addition, a 3.1-kilometre road project from Rumah Panjang Jambu Kerampak to Bukit Sadok area is also being implemented at a cost of RM39 million.
