KUCHING: Public speaking talents took centre stage at the joint Area D1 and D2 Toastmasters speech contests, where participants showcased their skills across multiple categories in a competitive yet supportive setting.

The contests, held on March 29 at the SUPP Headquarters here, featured the International Speech Contest, Evaluation Contest and Table Topics (Impromptu Speech) Contest, drawing contestants who had earlier emerged as winners at the club level.

In the D1 International Speech Contest (English), Datuk John Lau of Pacific International Toastmasters Club clinched first place, followed by Arwen Zahra Raess and Theron Then, both from Azam Young Souls Toastmasters Club.

For the D2 International Speech Contest (English), Abdul Al-Azim Ismail of AZAM Toastmasters Club secured the top spot, with Ting Sii Yu and Jonathan Huong, both from Kuching Toastmasters Club, finishing second and third respectively.

In the Table Topics Contest (English), Datuk John Lau again emerged champion in the D1 category, ahead of Stanley Gona and Jet Lee while Gerald Goh of Bee Speech Bilingual Toastmasters Club won the D2 category, followed by Jonathan Huong.

Raphael Yong of Bee Speech Bilingual Toastmasters Club took first place in the D2 Table Topics Contest (Mandarin).

Meanwhile, Arwen Zahra Raess topped the D1 Speech Evaluation Contest (English), with Stanley Gona and Datuk John Lau placing second and third.

In the D2 category, Janice Swee of Sarawak Energy Toastmasters Club emerged champion, followed by Jonathan Huong.

Area D1 director Ann Lee said speech contests form a key component of the Toastmasters educational programme.

“They provide a wonderful opportunity for Toastmasters to gain speaking experience, as well as an opportunity for others to learn by observing proficient speakers,” she added.

Area D2 director Rezuan Abdul Rashid noted that contestants had already proven themselves at the club level prior to advancing to the area contests.

“Speech contests bring out the best in each contestant,” he said.

The first-place winners from each category will go on to represent their respective areas at the Division D (Kuching) Speech Contests, scheduled to take place on April 19 at the SUPP Headquarters.

Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organisation focused on developing communication and leadership skills through structured programmes and supportive learning environments.
