KUCHING: A group of 12 students from Kuching South paid a courtesy call on Guro Mayor Jang In Hong during their participation in the Kuching South-Guro Student Exchange Programme, held from March 30 to April 4.

Welcoming the delegation, Jang noted the long-standing friendship between Guro City in South Korea and Kuching South, expressing hope that the visit would further strengthen ties between the two cities.

He said the exchange would provide a meaningful cultural experience for the students while reinforcing cooperation built through years of engagement.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, a student representative expressed appreciation for the opportunity, describing the visit as a memorable first experience in South Korea.

The student added that the group was grateful for the warm reception and valued the chance to be part of the programme.

Another student representative said the visit allowed participants to experience Korean culture first-hand while forming new friendships.

The exchange programme is conducted under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between both cities and is held on an alternating yearly basis.

Kuching South Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the initiative reflects the council’s commitment to youth development, particularly under the Unicef Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI).

He noted that Kuching South’s recognition as a Unicef Candidate City underscores efforts to provide young people with opportunities for international exposure, cultural exchange and meaningful learning experiences.

The programme continues to serve as a platform for strengthening cross-cultural understanding and fostering closer ties between the younger generation of both cities.
