KUCHING: The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) has been urged to review its plans for the ‘Kuching Car-Free Morning’ this weekend due to concerns that the event may disrupt Easter Sunday services.
Right Reverend Danald Jute, who serves as the Chairman of the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS), noted that the event – scheduled for tomorrow (April 5) at Padang Merdeka – has triggered intense online debate as it coincides with one of the most significant days in the Christian calendar.
He pointed out that the concerns were partly fueled by a previous incident where loud music from the programme disrupted nearby church services.
“I have been in contact with the Minister-in-Charge of DBKU, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, to express our concern and appeal for his understanding,” Danald said in a public statement posted on Facebook today.
According to the Bishop, Dr Abdul Rahman responded positively and assured him that he would raise the matter with the organisers.
“We trust and hope that DBKU will do the right thing,” he added.
Amid the growing online debate, Danald also called on the public to refrain from escalating tensions and to maintain a respectful tone when discussing the issue.
“I appeal to all to cease the digital hostility and stop the unhealthy online discourse pertaining to the said event,” he said, urging netizens to avoid derogatory or disparaging remarks.
He further reminded Christians to uphold high standards of speech and conduct, especially during the Easter season, while extending his wishes for a blessed Easter to the community.
