KUCHING: The first light of day broke over Padang Merdeka as more than 800 runners laced up and filled the historic field for the inaugural LCDA Sapphire Run 1.0, held in conjunction with the Land Custody and Development Authority’s (LCDA) 45th anniversary today (Apr 5).

Representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan was Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment and Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development Datuk Len Talif Salleh who officiated the event.

Len speaks to reporters during the LCDA Sapphire Run 1.0 at Padang Merdeka.

The run featured two categories, namely 10km and 4.5km, drawing a mix of seasoned runners chasing podium spots and families taking part at a more relaxed pace.

The 10km category was flagged off by LCDA general manager in the cool morning air, followed by the 4.5km flag-off by Len as participants streamed out across the city route.

“This morning we are holding the 10km and 4.5km runs organised by LCDA for the first time, with more than 800 participants, both local and international,” said Len, speaking to reporters, noting that it marked LCDA’s first organised run in 45 years.

He noted that international runners, particularly from Kenya, dominated the top finishing positions, with strong performances setting the pace for the event.

Len said such initiatives help strengthen community participation while bringing government agencies closer to the public through inclusive activities.

“We hope activities like this will continue, not only in Kuching but also in other parts of Sarawak, with the next run planned in Sarikei this August,” he said.

Beyond the race, the event carried a festive atmosphere with lucky draw sessions and prize presentations, rounding off the morning on a celebratory note.
