SIBU: Sarawak Energy has uncovered an illegal electricity connection linked to a cryptocurrency mining operation at a double-storey semi-detached house located at Jalan Laichee here.

The discovery was made during a joint operation involving the meter inspection team from Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO) and the police, as part of ongoing enforcement efforts to curb electricity theft.

Inspection of the premises revealed direct tapping cables that bypassed the electricity meter and standard safety controls, powering 12 cryptocurrency mining servers and resulting in unrecorded electricity consumption.

All mining equipment and modified wiring were seized as evidence, and a police report has been lodged.

Investigations are being carried out under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance.

Those found guilty of electricity theft face a fine of up to RM200,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.

Sarawak Energy said cryptocurrency mining is highly energy-intensive and, when powered via unauthorised connections, can lead to financial losses and serious safety risks.

Improper wiring arrangements, such as those found at the premises, may cause overheating, electrical faults and fires, posing danger to occupants and nearby properties.

The utility company reiterated its firm stance against electricity theft and said it would continue working closely with enforcement agencies and the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak to detect and deter such offences.

Members of the public are encouraged to report suspected electricity theft to Sarawak Energy’s Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or via email.

All reports will be treated with strict confidentiality.
