KUCHING: A coordinated crackdown on illegal electronic waste activities across Sarawak has led to the arrest of 12 individuals and the seizure of items worth RM1.82 million in a multi-agency operation dubbed Op Hazard 3.0.
The operation, carried out on Apr 6, saw the Sarawak Brigade of the General Operations Force (GOF) working alongside several enforcement and regulatory bodies to conduct 10 raids across Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri.
Sarawak GOF Brigade Commander SAC Lim Bak Phai said those detained comprised 10 locals and two foreigners, suspected of engaging in the collection and processing of e-waste without adhering to licensing requirements and existing laws.
“Among the items seized were electrical wires and cables, electronic components, used batteries, tyres, as well as processing equipment.
“Vehicles and containers believed to have been used in the operations were also confiscated,” he said in a statement
He added that the joint operation involved the Department of Environment (DOE), Inland Revenue Board (LHDNM), Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), as well as local authorities including the Sri Aman District Council, Sibu local authorities, Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) and Miri City Council (MBM).
Lim said the operation was aimed at curbing illegal e-waste management activities, which pose serious risks to environmental sustainability and public safety.
“All arrested individuals and seized items have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further action under their respective jurisdictions,” he added.
He added that the Sarawak GOF Brigade will continue to intensify such operations through strategic collaboration with related agencies to ensure strict enforcement against unlawful environmental practices.
