KUCHING: The Sarawak government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening youth and sports development through the disbursement of grants to associations statewide.

The handover of grant for Youth and Sports 2026 highlights ongoing efforts to empower youth organisations and enhance sports ecosystems across Sarawak communities.

Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the initiative reflects strong government support for youth-driven development and participation.

He emphasised that the grants are not merely financial assistance, but a symbol of trust in youth and sports bodies to deliver impactful programmes.

“A total of RM1,934,600 has been allocated to 43 youth and sports associations, aimed at strengthening administration and supporting inclusive, progressive community initiatives,”he said.

He said this in his speech at the grant handover for Youth and Sports 2026 at Ranyai Ballroom, Waterfront Hotel here on Wednesday.

“Out of the total recipients, five youth organisations and 38 sports associations will directly benefit, ensuring a broad and balanced distribution of resources statewide.

Abdul Karim noted that the funding is expected to serve as a catalyst for associations to remain active, competitive and relevant in their respective fields.

He added that continued engagement and effective programme implementation will help associations create meaningful impact while fostering stronger community participation and unity.

He expressed hope for more high-impact programmes this year, positioning youth and sports as key pillars in Sarawak’s development agenda.

“Preparations are also underway as Sarawak gears up to host several sporting events under the upcoming SEA Games, with infrastructure upgrades progressing steadily.

“These improvements are part of a long-term strategy to enhance sports facilities while nurturing new talents and promoting a strong sporting culture statewide.

“A total of 11 development projects, worth RM277 million, are currently being implemented in Kuching, including upgrades to Sarawak Stadium for the 2027 SEA Games,” he said.

Abdul Karim urged all grant recipients to utilise the funds responsibly, ensuring benefits reach the wider community and contribute to sustainable development.

He expressed confidence that such initiatives will drive Sarawak towards becoming a leading hub for youth empowerment and sports excellence.
