KUCHING: More than 10,000 participants are expected to take part in the Hong San Si temple celebration, reinforcing its standing as one of Kuching’s largest cultural processions and a key highlight on the state’s tourism calendar.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian officiated the pre-event ceremony at Wayang Street this evening ahead of the main procession scheduled today (Apr 9).
Kuching Hokkien Association president Datuk Seri Richard Wee Liang Chiat said the celebration continues to attract participants from across Malaysia, including Sabah and Malaya.
“We welcome deities from Sabah and Kedah to join the celebration, and we hope to attract even more people,” he said when met by reporters.
He added that a total of 222 troupes are expected to take part in the procession, with preparations focused on ensuring smooth coordination.
“We expect easily more than 10,000 people. It has always been the largest procession in Kuching,” he said.
Wee said the event has also drawn tourists in recent days, with visitors arriving early to experience the atmosphere and capture photographs.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sim said the increasing participation from outside Sarawak reflects growing recognition of the state’s unity and stability.
“They come to respect us and hope to be like Sarawak,” he said adding that such events play a role in strengthening social cohesion while enhancing Sarawak’s appeal as a cultural and tourism destination.
The main procession, featuring fire dragon performances and religious rituals, is expected to take place on Thursday.
