KUCHING: The 2026 Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign plays an important role in educating the public on the early symptoms of the disease.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said increased awareness can lead to earlier health screening and timely intervention.

“Colorectal cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in Malaysia. Symptoms such as persistent changes in bowel habits, the presence of blood in stool and prolonged abdominal discomfort should not be ignored,” he said.

His speech was read out by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at the Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign at the foyer of the Day Care Centre (DCC), Sarawak General Hospital today.

Abang Johari said this year’s campaign theme highlights the importance of early prevention, structured screening and healthy lifestyle practices in reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.

He said the campaign’s key message emphasises prevention through early screening, which can save lives, particularly among high-risk groups.

“It is important for us to understand that this cancer can be prevented and effectively treated if detected early,” he said.

Meanwhile, the campaign features several key activities, including awareness booths and health screening involving the Colorectal and Stoma Surgery Team, Oncology Unit as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

It also involves the Kuching Divisional Health Office (PKB), private hospitals such as Normah, KPJ and BMC, as well as non-governmental organisations including the Kuching Cancer Advocacy and Awareness Society (SCAN) and the National Cancer Society of Malaysia Sarawak Branch (NCSMSB).

The campaign also includes charity sales, games and lucky draws, as well as handicraft and food stalls.

“I would like to express my appreciation to the organising committee and all partners for their dedication and commitment in making this important initiative a success,” he added.
