KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here today (Apr 9) fined 23-year-old man RM3,000 after admitting to carrying out an act of criminal intimidation involving a petrol-filled bottle at a house in Kampung Demak Baru.

Sulaiman Mohamat pleaded guilty to the charge before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali.

The court heard that the accused, together with an accomplice who is still at large, committed the offence with the intention of causing alarm and threatening damage to property using fire.

The incident took place in front of a house in Kampung Demak Baru at about 5.35 am on March 21.

The charge was framed under Section 506 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Code, which provides for joint liability.

The court ordered Sulaiman to serve 10 months’ imprisonment in default of payment of the fine.

According to the facts of the case, the complainant was alerted by the sound of his house alarm and went out to investigate, where he discovered a plastic bottle containing petrol spilled near his child’s car.

Burnt marks were also found on the cement floor outside the house.

A review of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage later revealed that the driver of a Proton Saga had stabbed the bottle and ignited it within the compound.

No major damage was reported apart from the burn marks on the exterior floor.

A police report was subsequently lodged, leading to the arrest of the accused on April 1 at a house in Kampung Tupong Tengah.

Investigations found that Sulaiman had admitted to accompanying the suspect to the location to throw the bottle with the intention of scaring the complainant.

He also confessed to receiving RM100 as payment for carrying out the act.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Mohammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly, while the accused was unrepresented.
