KUCHING: The release of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results has prompted many students to actively begin navigating their next academic steps, marking a new phase in their educational journey.

Amid this important decision making process, Sarawak Tribune interviewed some SPM leavers, who are reflecting on their strengths, future potential challenges and career pathways in order to make informed choices.

For Nicholas Hayden, he explains his study direction choices while remaining open to other study courses.

Nicholas Hayden

“I am most interested in courses related to business and management and finance and banking. But I am also open to similar fields such as marketing, economics and human resource management.”

He also said that he preferred to study outside of Sarawak due to exploring opportunities that are available.

However, Nicholas shared his worries in the future when he has continued his studies.

“While I am aware of many challenges ahead, my main concern is adapting to a new environment such as planning and managing daily life, making new friends and fitting in.”

Cassandra Cissy

He is also currently doing his research on several universities, exploring job opportunities on the careers chosen and working on completing his driver’s licence while waiting for his Unit Pengambilan Universiti (UPU) results.

Additionally, Cassandra Cissy also shared a similar phase, where she is also waiting for her results.

“I want to pursue my studies in Foundation in Science at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), with the aim of continuing my degree in Pharmacy at the same institution.

“With my excellent Chemistry score in my SPM, I am confident that my abilities are a suitable foundation for my future career.”

While remaining hopeful about her future of getting accepted at UMS, she also acknowledged the challenges ahead.

“Once I get accepted into the course I’m passionate about, I will be studying far from my family, which means I will have to arrange my own transport to get from one place to another.”

Milley Rhodina

On the other hand, Milley Rhodina expressed that she is prepared to pursue her studies regardless of location, though there are challenges of studying outside her home state.

“I am open to study anywhere as long as I get my chosen path. But since I have no relatives beyond the state, I will have to travel independently while adapting to the new environments.”

Milley shared this concern after considering her preferred institution, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), which is located in Perak, the western side of Peninsular Malaysia.

“I would like to pursue my studies for a Diploma in Mathematical Sciences due to the wide range of career opportunities in the field.”

With different inspirations for their chosen fields of study, ranging from SPM results to considerations of career opportunities, they all share one equivalent goal; to gather more knowledge and develop themselves academically and personally.

This shared determination positions them to contribute towards building a more advanced nation as the future generation.
