JOHOR BAHRU: Police have arrested a man and a woman to assist in investigations into the discovery of a baby girl abandoned in the parking area of a surau in Taman Universiti, Skudai, last Saturday.
Johor Bahru Utara police chief Radin Ramlan Radin Taha said the two local suspects, aged 18 and 19, were detained at about 2.15 am today in the Taman Universiti area by a team from the district’s Criminal Investigation Division.
“Initial checks found that both suspects have no prior criminal records, and urine screening tests returned negative results,” he said in a statement.
He added that the suspects will be brought to the Johor Bahru Court for a remand application.
The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for exposure and abandonment of a child, which carries a penalty of up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Previously, it was reported that the baby girl was found alive, wrapped in a towel and with the umbilical cord still attached, at the location.
Radin Ramlan said police received a report on the incident at 7.33 pm from a member of the public who heard the baby crying.
The infant was subsequently taken to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for examination and treatment and is currently in stable condition.
