KUCHING: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has confirmed that Pearly Tan will not be part of the national squad for the 2026 Uber Cup due to a back injury sustained from her last tournament.
In a statement, BAM said the decision was made following a late assessment of her condition.
Doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said the shuttler was not fit to compete at the required level.
“Pearly was not in a position to compete at the required level. We had to make a decision to ensure the team is fully prepared,” he said.
Pearly later issued an emotional statement in her social media accounts, apologising to teammates and supporters after confirming her withdrawal.
“I sincerely apologize for letting everyone down. I recently suffered a back injury during my last tournament… it breaks my heart to say that I won’t be able to join the Uber Cup this time.
“There’s nothing I wanted more than to be on court, fighting for every point and standing with my team. But because of my back injury, I’ve had to step back for now.
“Anyone who knows me understands that I would never walk away from the court. I would fight until the very last point… but this time my body is telling me to stop, and I have to listen.
“I promise I will do everything I can to come back stronger. For now, all I wish for is a healthy body to return to the court again.”
She added that she will continue to support the team from afar and hopes to return to competition soon.
