KUCHING: Strong corporate backing and an array of attractive prizes are set to take centre stage at this year’s OM-KGS Junior Masters Open Golf Championship, as organisers ramp up efforts to elevate the tournament’s appeal and impact.
A total sponsorship pool of RM58,000 has been secured for the three-day (April 17-19)event, led by main sponsor OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd with a contribution of RM45,000.
Additional support comes from Coramax Sdn Bhd, BYD Regas Bhd, i-Cafe Chinese Muslim Restaurant, Borneo Biscuit Factory Sdn Bhd and Urban Empire Builders Sdn Bhd, among others – underscoring strong industry confidence in the championship.
A statement issued by the organisers today (April 16) said that the backing translates into rewarding incentives for participants, with the top three finishers in each category set to receive trophies, gift vouchers and well-curated goodie bags.
“The prizes, coupled with the tournament’s growing reputation, are expected to further motivate young golfers to perform at their best.
“Beyond the rewards, the championship also serves as a key competitive platform,” the statement added.
Organising chairman, Mike Chin, revealed that the event has been recognised by the Sarawak State Education Department (JPNS) as a selection ground for the Malaysian School Sports Council (MSSM) tournament in Sabah this June.
“Winners will earn automatic slots to represent Sarawak at the national meet in Kota Kinabalu,” he said.
OM Materials’ Human Resources and Administration General Manager, Lisa Lee Lai Pek, said the company’s continued sponsorship reflects its commitment to youth development through sport.
She emphasised that golf instils valuable qualities such as discipline, resilience and integrity – traits that extend beyond and into future careers.
The tournament, which tees off on Friday (April 17) at Kelab Golf Sarawak (KGS), has attracted 60 young golfers from Sarawak, Sabah, Labuan and Brunei.
“They will compete across four age-group categories ranging from under-10 to 18 years old.
“With strong sponsorship support and meaningful rewards at stake, the stage is set for an exciting and competitive weekend of junior golf,” the statement read.
