DEBAK: Communities in Betong are seeking upgrades to electricity supply, fibre-optic connectivity, and affordable housing to support growing development needs in the division.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said some areas were still relying on single-phase electricity systems that could no longer meet current household demand.
“Previously, one plug was enough for cooking, one for a fan and maybe one for a refrigerator. Now households have several refrigerators and air-conditioners.
“So, when everything is switched on, the power supply trips,” he said during the ‘Majlis Pemimpin Bersama Rakyat’ programme in Debak today.
He said residents were therefore requesting that the electricity supply be upgraded as soon as possible to support daily needs and economic activities.
Uggah also highlighted the need to improve fibre-optic connectivity in the area to support upcoming development projects.
“We are talking about the airport and agriculture parks. All these require fast and modern digital connectivity so that we can connect with the rest of the world,” he said.
He added that the division was also facing increasing demand for affordable housing, particularly among second-generation residents.
“Affordable housing has been proposed along Jalan Lidung, and we hope this request can be considered because many young families now need homes,” he said.
Uggah expressed hope the infrastructure improvements would enable Betong to benefit fully from ongoing regional development initiatives and future economic opportunities in agriculture, logistics and tourism.
