MELAKA: The spirit of goodwill and cooperation between the media and community organisations must continue to be strengthened in addressing current challenges, including the spread of misinformation and global uncertainties.

Malaysian National News Agency (BERNAMA) Chairman, Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, said the media plays a significant role not only as a conveyor of news but also in shaping public perception, fostering empathy, and connecting communities from diverse backgrounds.

“The media does not merely deliver news, but shapes perceptions, nurtures empathy and connects society,” he said when speaking at the Media Appreciation Night organised by the Melaka Civil Defence Force Associate Officers Association (PPBAPM) here tonight.

He said media coverage of Melaka PPBAPM’s various initiatives, including humanitarian missions, emergency response and community training, has helped raise public awareness and strengthen the spirit of togetherness among society.

Meanwhile, Wong said the world today faces multiple challenges, including humanitarian crises and the spread of misinformation, which require a more responsible approach from all parties.

“Goodwill is not merely a slogan, but a commitment to mutual understanding, respect and cooperation despite differences in background,” he said.

He also praised Melaka PPBAPM’s commitment, which was not only active operationally but also consistently promoted racial harmony through inclusive, community-based initiatives.

“Such approaches are the best examples of how goodwill can be translated into real action,” he said.

Wong added that society today needed healthy spaces for dialogue and unifying narratives, stressing that all parties, including the media, uniformed bodies, the corporate sector and the public, shared the responsibility of ensuring that every message conveyed is constructive.

“With close cooperation and trust, we can build a more harmonious, resilient and united society,” he said. – BERNAMA
