KUCHING: The Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) delivered a historic performance to finish seventh overall at the ODEA World Chinese Tennis Federation (WCTF) Team Championships.
The tournament concluded at the SLTA Centre here on Sunday (April 19).
Representing Malaysia, the hosts secured a top-10 finish for the first time, marking a significant improvement from last year’s edition in Wenzhou, China, where they finished second from bottom among 32 teams.
Team captain, Dr Wee Thian Yew, credited the achievement to strong teamwork and the squad’s fighting spirit throughout the tournament.
“It was a combined effort from everyone in the team. The inclusion of Simon Tiong, Gabriel Ong and Ann Liew, who did not play in Wenzhou, strengthened the squad,” he said.
Inner Mongolia Tennis Association emerged as champions after defeating Jiangsu Nanking Shunli Steel Industry Team (China) 2-0 in the Diamond Group final, while Shandong Zhonghua Taishan Team (China) finished third.
More than 200 players from 24 teams representing China, Inner Mongolia, Macau, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the United States took part in the tournament, which was organised by the WCTF and hosted by SLTA.
