KUCHING: The local electrical industry is set for a significant workforce boost as 42 participants undergo specialised training under the GE Vernova Energy Industry Skills Scholarship – Electrician Low Voltage Chargeman (L1) Programme.

The six-month initiative is currently being conducted at the Sarawak Electrical Industry Training Institute (SEITI) in Tabuan Laru, a subsidiary of Sarawak Skills.

A joint effort between the Federation of Malaysian Skills Development Centres (FMSDC) and the GE Vernova Foundation, the programme is being implemented by Sarawak Skills to address the critical skills gap in low-voltage electrical installation and safety practices.

A theoretical session in progress at SEITI in Tabuan Laru.

Divided into two batches, the first group commenced training on February 14 and will conclude on July 12, while the second batch is running from February 28 to July 19.

FMSDC’s Chairman and Sarawak Skills’ Executive Director, Hallman Sabri, emphasised that the programme is designed to align with strict industry standards and regulatory requirements.

“By equipping participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, we are preparing them to contribute effectively to Malaysia’s growing electrical and energy sectors,” he said in a statement.

He added that the strategic partnership with the GE Vernova Foundation demonstrates how collaboration can effectively address industry needs while creating meaningful opportunities for underprivileged individuals and experienced technicians.

The scholarship focuses on a competency-based curriculum covering electrical system maintenance, troubleshooting and compliance.

It specifically targets technicians with over three years of experience and individuals from underprivileged backgrounds to ensure inclusive workforce development.

Throughout the training, participants gain hands-on experience in high-quality practical environments, including exposure to renewable energy sectors.

Graduates of the programme are expected to enhance their career progression while supporting the long-term sustainability and scalability of Malaysia’s electrical services sector.
