KUCHING: As one of the most awaited musical fiestas that makes the Land of the Hornbills stand proudly, the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) is set to commence again this year starting June 26 to 28.

Kuching is preparing to come alive with a vibrant mix of global rhythms, cultural showcases, and enthusiastic crowds.

Music lovers from near and far will gather to celebrate one of the region’s most iconic cultural events, held at the Sarawak Cultural Village.

Sarawak Tribune spoke to some music enthusiasts to share their expectations and reminisced their past experiences of Rainforest World Music Festival.

“I am from Pahang, and this festival is truly different from the usual music festivals in Peninsular Malaysia, as it incorporates Sarawak’s cultural values alongside the music, creating space for cultural exchange.

The location at the Sarawak Cultural Village is especially appealing, as I am eager to learn more about Sarawak’s culture through first-hand experience rather than from books or online sources.

I am also looking forward to M. Nasir’s performance, particularly in such a unique setting. I believe it will be a memorable experience, similar to when Datuk Zainal Abidin performed Hijau at RWMF 2024, which I watched online.”

“The RWMF is such a great opportunity for people to gather around and chill while enjoying good music.

I believe that tourism event like this brings in high revenue for the state and also for people to know more about the indigenous culture here, as visitors will get to see our diverse cultures brought to life through full traditional attire.

It will not only offer a vivid display of our heritage and identity, but they can also experience the sounds of traditional instruments that are rarely encountered in everyday life, adding a unique and authentic dimension to the festival atmosphere.”

“I am joining the event because I have always been open to exploring music from around the world, even when I was unfamiliar with some of the artists. During my previous RWMF, the vibes during the night was a truly unforgettable experience.

Other than that, my highlight would be playing traditional games and also get to do the line dance with strangers immersing to the song and music.

There are also engaging craft workshops that allow visitors to create meaningful souvenirs as keepsakes from the event, while at the same time supporting local handicraft businesses and helping to preserve cultural heritage. I hope to make new memories like this again in the upcoming festival.”

“It is indeed a good event to promote Sarawak culture while also boosting our tourism scene, especially with the various tourist attractions that are opening up in Kuching.

The event is not limited to only offering the performances from global and local artists, but there are also longhouses, baruk houses and also many traditional settings that are an eye opener for visitors.

From the atmosphere happening in Sarawak Cultural Village, we get to show our traditional culture, practices and heritage. The massive event also showcases that Sarawak is capable of organising an international event.”
