SARIKEI: The Low Carbon Day programme held at Taman Tasik here today (Apr 25) strengthened public awareness on environmental conservation while promoting low-carbon lifestyle practices.
Sarikei District Council (MDS) Chairman, Councillor Stephen Wong Kie Yong, said the programme is a key initiative supporting the sustainable development agenda and fostering an environmentally friendly culture among the local community.
He said the programme goes beyond routine activities, serving as a platform to raise public awareness on individual roles in protecting the environment.
“Programmes like this emphasise practical actions that individuals can take, including reducing pollution and adopting a healthy lifestyle,” he said when officiating at the event.
He added that the cleanliness level at the programme site was satisfactory, reflecting the council’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a clean urban environment.
Meanwhile, he stressed that global climate change requires immediate and continuous action, even if it begins with small steps at the community level.
He noted that consistent efforts today can contribute to significant changes in the future.
He also expressed appreciation to all parties involved, including government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), council staff and students who participated in making the programme a success.
Among the main activities was ‘plogging’, which combines jogging and picking up litter, offering benefits to both participants’ health and environmental cleanliness.
The programme also featured a tree-planting activity aimed at expanding green spaces and improving air quality.
“This initiative not only benefits the environment but also serves as a long-term investment for the wellbeing of future generations,” he said.
Wong expressed hope that such programmes would continue as a sustained practice to ensure environmental sustainability is preserved.
