KUCHING: Every citizen’s rights to lodge a police report must be fully respected and protected without exception, says Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap Yau Sin.
He pointed out that recent directives from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) leadership, including the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), have made it unequivocally clear that officers cannot refuse to accept reports from the public under any circumstances.
Yap said the matter was highlighted by a recent case involving a vulnerable constituent – a disabled individual caring for four underaged children with the family relying solely on monthly welfare assistance.
He said he personally assisted and accompanied the individual to lodge a police report required by Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) to open a bank account.
According to Yap, the individual had earlier attempted to lodge a police report to facilitate the continuation of his RM450 monthly welfare aid, after his BSN account was closed due to complications involving inactive accounts at other banks that were allegedly flagged for mule account activity.
He further added that in cases involving vulnerable individuals, any delay or refusal to accept a police report can have serious and immediate consequences on livelihoods.
“Lodging a police report is a fundamental right and an essential step in ensuring that assistance reaches those in need. No one, especially the most vulnerable, should be denied this right,” he said in a statement today (Apr 25).
He stressed that any attempt to refuse, delay or discourage the lodging of a police report is unacceptable and may constitute a breach of duty.
“Public confidence in law enforcement depends on accessibility, transparency and professionalism. The police must remain approachable and responsive to all members of society, regardless of background or circumstance,” he said.
Yap reiterated that directives from the IGP affirm that no individual should be denied the opportunity to lodge a police report.
He added that he remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that no one is left behind, especially those most in need.
