PARIS: Sarawak is set to solidify its position on the global stage as it prepares to officially receive the UNESCO Global Geopark certificate for the Sarawak Delta tonight.
The presentation ceremony is scheduled to take place at 3.45 pm local time (10.45 pm Malaysia time) at the UNESCO headquarters here.
Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said that the recognition is a significant milestone in establishing Sarawak as a premier sustainable tourism destination internationally.
“This moment is deeply meaningful as Sarawak will receive official certification from UNESCO, subsequently placing the state as an outstanding sustainable tourism destination on the global stage,” he said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.
Len Talif, who is also Sarawak Delta Global Geopark Steering Committee chairman, is currently leading the Sarawak delegation to Paris to fulfill this important agenda.
As part of the mission, a dinner followed by a briefing on the certificate presentation ceremony was held with the Permanent Representative of Malaysia to UNESCO, Hazreen Abdul Haleem.
The meeting focused on efforts to strengthen global cooperation and discussed the progress of Sarawak’s geopark initiatives to ensure they remain aligned with international standards.
The Sarawak delegation also included Ministry of Urban Development and Natural Resources (MUDeRN) Permanent Secretary Datuk Abdullah Julaihi; Forests Department Sarawak director Datuk Hamden Mohammed; and senior government officials from relevant agencies.
