KUCHING: Graduates of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus were on Tuesday told to step confidently into an increasingly complex global landscape and turn emerging challenges into meaningful impact.
Swinburne University of Technology Chancellor Professor John Pollaers OAM said they were graduating into a world undergoing unprecedented change.
“Technology is transforming how we live and work, while Artificial Intelligence is reshaping industries and lives.
“We are navigating complex global challenges, like climate change and political uncertainty, alongside demographic shifts and the ongoing need to build more inclusive societies,” he said in his welcoming address during the university’s graduation ceremony held at the BCCK.
He stressed that he was raising these challenges not as a warning, but as a significant opportunity for the graduates to play their role.
In addition, he told the graduates that their Swinburne qualification was their passport to an exciting future where they had the opportunity to help shape a society that harnesses technology for the greater good.
“In a time when authenticity and hope can sometimes feel in short supply, Swinburne strives to be a beacon, a place that communities can turn to for leadership and for ways forward.
“As Swinburne graduates, I encourage you to now carry that light forward,” he said.
Pollaers also urged the graduates to consider how they would use the skills, knowledge, and perspectives they had gained at Swinburne to build a better future.
Meanwhile, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Swinburne Professor Simon Ridings, encouraged them to be confident that their time at Swinburne had equipped them with the resilience, skills, and confidence needed to navigate uncertainty and thrive in their chosen careers.
“At Swinburne, we are always focused on the future. Our vision of people and technology working together to build a better world drives us to think differently, act with purpose, and reimagine what a university could be and should be.
“We build on strong foundations in Work Integrated Learning, graduate employability, research excellence, industry collaboration, and global best practice. Swinburne is determined to be a fully tech-infused university that remains ahead of the curve,” he said.
He added that the graduates, now alumni, had a unique role to play in shaping what’s next for themselves, Swinburne, and the students that follow them.
Ridings called on the graduates to support this legacy as they progressed in their careers, by mentoring students, hosting placements, or collaborating with Swinburne on real-world challenges facing their respective industries.
