MIRI: Police have stepped up night-time enforcement with coordinated operations that saw 23 traffic summonses issued, three individuals detained for drug-related offences, and one foreign national arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

The integrated operations, conducted under the Miri District Police Headquarters, involved 34 personnel comprising six senior officers and 28 rank-and-file officers.

It formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen crime prevention and maintain public order across key urban and residential areas.

Officers were briefed earlier at the Dewan Ruai Kenyalang within IPD Miri, where operational roles were assigned covering roadblocks, mobile patrols, snap checks, and inspections of entertainment premises.

Police officers conduct a roadblock inspection during integrated crime prevention operations in Miri.

The operations began at 10:00 pm with multiple roadblocks set up at strategic locations across the district.

Police conducted checks on motorists and vehicles, focusing on compliance with road safety regulations and identifying potential offences.

A total of 23 summonses were issued for a range of violations, including driving without a valid licence, expired road tax, illegal vehicle modifications, non-standard number plates, and technical non-compliance such as missing side mirrors and modified exhaust systems.

In one case, a foreign woman was detained on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Police said investigations are ongoing.

Alongside the roadblocks, patrol units carried out continuous mobile rounds and snap checks across housing estates, villages and main roads.

The strategy, described by officers as maintaining “omnipresence”, is aimed at deterring opportunistic crime and increasing visible police presence in public spaces.

Entertainment outlets were also inspected during the operations.

Police conducted urine screening tests on selected individuals, resulting in three people testing positive for drugs. They were detained for further investigation under relevant laws.

Authorities said the operations reflect a broader enforcement approach combining prevention, detection and community reassurance.

The focus, they added, is not only on apprehending offenders but also on strengthening public confidence in overall safety levels.

Police confirmed that similar operations will continue periodically as part of sustained efforts to curb crime and reinforce law enforcement visibility in high-activity areas.

The district police said such initiatives are essential in maintaining order in a growing urban environment, where mobility and nightlife activity continue to increase pressure on enforcement resources.
