KUCHING: A total of 68 trees were planted along Jalan Sherip Masahor in conjunction with World Earth Day to support Kuching’s urban greening efforts.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor, Datuk Wee Hong Seng, said the programme was not just about planting trees, but also part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote a low carbon city.
“We are gathered here for a simple but meaningful purpose, to plant trees and care for our environment. World Earth Day reminds us that protecting the earth is everyone’s responsibility,” he said during the programme today (Apr 30).
We said the Happiness Tree or Garcinia subelliptica planted during the programme is suitable for the local climate.
He said they will provide long term benefits to the community in terms of cleaner air, cooler surroundings and better public comfort.
“Every tree planted helps absorb carbon dioxide from the air, which in turn helps reduce the effects of global warming.
“In simple terms, more trees mean cleaner air, cooler surroundings and a healthier place to live,” he said.
Wee said the greening initiative is not something new, as MBKS had previously planted 93 trees along the same stretch of road in 2024, from Batu 3 Roundabout to Hui Sing Roundabout.
He also said the programme also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 on sustainable cities, SDG 13 on climate action and SDG 15 on life on land.
