MIRI: Drawn into a challenging Group H, SABERKASA Telang Usan Branch are embracing their underdog status as they gear up for the SABERKAS President’s Cup Futsal Championship 2026 with fearless intent.
Placed alongside Pakan, Beting Maro and Bukit Begunan, the path ahead is far from easy.
However, as an emerging side, Telang Usan are not merely participating to make up the numbers, but to prove that determination and fighting spirit can match experience and reputation.
Team manager Spanski Steven stressed that the squad is ready to rise to the occasion.
“We are not just here to complete the fixtures, but to prove that high fighting spirit can rival experience and reputation,” he told Sarawak Tribune today (April 30).
More impressively, the squad is made up entirely of young players from Telang Usan, reflecting the rise of local talent eager to carry the district’s name onto a bigger stage.
Despite their relative inexperience, the team holds firmly to a simple but powerful principle – never give up.
Spanski said the players are determined to deliver performances that are competitive, disciplined and full of character.
The team also expressed their highest appreciation to Telang Usan assemblyman, Datuk Dennis Ngau, who is also the Chairman of SABERKAS Telang Usan Branch, for officiating the team’s flag-off.
“The words of encouragement from YB Datuk Dennis Ngau have served as a major boost of motivation for the players to compete with confidence,” he added.
He also extended gratitude to Baram FC, under the guidance of head of technical, Benedict Martin, for their support and assistance in preparing the team.
Telang Usan may begin their campaign as underdogs, but as Spanski highlighted, the aim is clear – to return “with pride, strong performances, and perhaps spring an unexpected surprise”.
The squad departs from Miri today for the tournament, which will be held from May 1 to 2 at Arena Sukan, Simpang Tiga, in Kuching.
