SIBU: The fishing community and residents of Bukit Lan, Sungai Labaan and Ensurai, came together for a lively Labour Day celebration on Friday (May 1), strengthening the spirit of unity and appreciation for fishermen.
Bawang Assan assemblyman, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, said the celebration was not only a platform to celebrate Labour Day, but also reflected solidarity among the local community.

“On this occasion, I would like to record my respect and gratitude to all workers for their commitment, effort and dedication,” he said at the event.
Wong also stressed that Labour Day carries a broader meaning, not just recognition of the workforce, but also as a symbol of unity, the spirit of cooperation and perseverance in facing challenges.
Meanwhile, he added that interest in fishing activities has become a factor in unifying communities from various areas.
“Despite coming from different backgrounds and places, we are united by common interests. This strengthens friendships and the spirit of camaraderie,” he said.
He pointed out that fishing is not just for fun, it can also develop positive values such as patience, focus and resilience, as well as providing an opportunity to get closer to nature.
Wong hoped that the spirit of togetherness fostered through the event would continue, while also encouraging the community to contribute positively to their families and communities.
Also present to enliven the event were Councillors Wong Hua and Sean Wong.
