KUCHING: Sarawak’s rise in Malaysian cricket reached a new high as they captured the MCA Men’s 50 Overs Inter-State Challenge Cup 2026 title, overcoming Penang by 29 runs in the final.
Batting first, Sarawak posted a formidable 256 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs, built on a commanding innings by Kasun Vidura A.A., who struck an unbeaten 144 off 141 deliveries. He was well supported by Prajwal Pavan, who contributed 55, while Hamzah Panggi added 14 to steady the middle order.
Penang, in reply, struggled to find their rhythm and were restricted to 141 for 8 in 29 overs (D/L method), as Sarawak’s disciplined bowling attack sealed the contest.
SUKMA prospect Hazrul Izani led the bowling charge with impressive figures of 3 for 23 from four overs. Hamzah Panggi and Prajwal Pavan also made valuable contributions with two and one wicket respectively.
Kasun Vidura’s all-round brilliance, featuring a match-winning century and two wickets, earned him the Player of the Match award. He capped off a stellar tournament by being named Player of the Tournament, finishing as the leading batsman with 523 runs and taking 13 wickets.
Sarawak Cricket Association (SCA) vice-president Victor Graman described the victory as a significant milestone for the sport in the state.
“The players showed great discipline, fighting spirit and strong teamwork throughout the tournament.
“This win is important as we continue to develop and grow cricket in Sarawak, and it reflects one of the success stories we have been working hard to achieve,” he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted today (May 4).
Sarawak, as champions, have qualified for the prestigious Premier Cup, which features five other elite teams in the country, with the competition set to run from May 6 to 22.
