SIBU: The 2026 Bawang Assan Zone Athletics Championship is described as an important platform in shaping a competitive young generation when it successfully displays fighting spirit and high sportsmanship values among the athletes competing.
Bawang Assan assemblyman, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said that the organisation of the championship not only highlights the physical capabilities of the participants, but also demonstrates mental endurance, discipline and the spirit of not giving up easily.

According to him, the noble values highlighted throughout the championship are an important foundation in producing an excellent and resilient future generation of Sarawak.
“This competition proves that success is not solely measured by victory, but rather the courage to challenge oneself, the determination to rise and continuous efforts to improve performance are more important,” he said at the recent closing ceremony of the championship here which involved the participation of eight schools, namely SK Bawang Assan, SK Tanjung Bekakap, SK Sungai Lengan, SJK Keng Bang, SJK Tai Tung, SJK Boi Ing, SJK Kai Dee and SJK Ung Nang.
Meanwhile, Wong also expressed his appreciation to the organisers for the success of hosting the tournament smoothly, while recognising the great role of teachers and coaches in guiding and unearthing the talents of young athletes.
He also stressed that the continued support of parents plays a significant role in ensuring the positive development of children in the field of sports.
“Without the commitment of all parties including parents, teachers and coaches, the achievements attained would not have been possible,” he said.
Elaborating further, he said that sports development at the grassroots level needs to be further strengthened as it is the main medium in identifying and polishing new talents.
“Through competitions like this, we have the opportunity to produce athletes who are not only capable of bringing glory to Sarawak, but also have the potential to represent the country at a higher level,” he added.
In this regard, he assured that the Sarawak government would continue to be committed to strengthening youth and sports development by improving facilities and providing more opportunities for the younger generation.
“We want to produce children who are not only excellent in academics, but also excel in sports, have high self-discipline and are able to compete at the global level,” he stressed.
