KOTASAMARAHAN: Sarawak’s drive to build a more skilled technical workforce in the energy sector has been reinforced with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) accredited as a training and examination centre for gas and electricity competency courses.
Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Liwan Lagang, representing Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said the recognition reflects the state’s push to align talent development with the evolving demands of its energy sector.
He said the gas and electricity sectors are not merely utility providers but strategic assets linked to industrial growth, investment inflows and public wellbeing.

“Management of this sector must be supported by a structured framework, robust training systems and a workforce that is truly competent,” he said when delivering the minister’s speech at the accreditation certificate presentation ceremony held at DeTAR UNIMAS on Tuesday.
He added that utility safety cannot rely solely on informal experience, but must be reinforced through systematic training, proper assessment and recognised professional certification.
Touching on the electricity sector, he noted its growing role in supporting industrial expansion and the transition towards renewable energy, particularly solar, which requires higher technical competencies among the local workforce.
“Development of a competent workforce in electrical wiring and solar PV system design must be prioritised in line with technological advancements and industry needs,” he added.
Meanwhile, UNIMAS Vice Chancellor Ahmad Hata Rasit described the accreditation as both an honour and a responsibility for the university to continue contributing to the state’s development.
He said the Faculty of Engineering has been entrusted to develop modules and conduct competency courses in gas and electricity through strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication.
Among the programmes offered are Gas Fitter Class III and II, Wireman Grade 1 (three-phase wiring), Wireman Grade 2 (single-phase wiring), as well as renewable energy-related courses such as Solar PV Design and Chargeman L4 Solar installation.
“With our academic expertise, experienced instructors and existing facilities, UNIMAS is ready to serve as a trusted training and examination centre,” he said.
Also present were UNIMAS board of directors (BOD) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, senior university management, ministry officials, industry representatives and invited guests.
