KUCHING: The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) are exploring closer collaboration in media coverage ahead of upcoming major events.

Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said the collaboration would focus on preparations for the 2027 SEA Games and the upcoming state election.

She said Bernama is ready to contribute its expertise in journalism, particularly in managing media coverage for major events.

“Our experience in handling media operations, including during SUKMA in Sarawak last year, as well as international media centres for ASEAN meetings and other national events, allows us to share our expertise.”

She told the media this after a courtesy call on Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS) Datuk Abdullah Saidol at the UKAS office, Baitulmakmur Building here on Tuesday (May 5).

Nur-ul Afida added that the discussion also covered training programmes for journalists in Sarawak, as well as other initiatives that may involve collaboration with UKAS and the Sarawak government.

Meanwhile, Abdullah said the collaboration is important to improve the readiness of media personnel in the state.

“Although UKAS has experience managing media operations during SUKMA, the SEA Games is on a different scale.

“We appreciate Bernama’s willingness to organise programmes to share knowledge and experience so that UKAS personnel will be better prepared when the SEA Games is held.”

Abdullah added that the collaboration would also cover preparations for the upcoming state election and other future programmes.

He said information-sharing between the two agencies is crucial, given Sarawak’s vast geographical area which can be difficult for journalists to cover within a short time.

He said UKAS would also work with larger media platforms such as RTM and other agencies in managing media centres and coordinating the presence of outstation journalists.

This includes logistical aspects such as accommodation, workspace facilities, internet access, public transport and catering.
