KUCHING: Immigration officers detained 43 foreign nationals in a sweeping day-long crackdown targeting illegal workers across the city from early Thursday (May 7) to late night.

The operations, carried out by the Kuching Immigration Enforcement Division, covered multiple locations including a fish landing jetty, construction sites and rented premises.

The first raid at the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) fish landing jetty in Tanjong Bako saw several foreigners picked up for failing to produce valid travel documents.

The team, assisted by LKIM officers, had earlier detected their prolonged presence in the area.

In the afternoon, enforcement officers moved to two houses under construction in Kampung Jaya Bakti and Kampung Sungai Batu.

Several foreign nationals believed to be working as construction labourers without valid permits were detained.

All those arrested were taken to the Immigration Enforcement Office in Kuching for further action.

At night, operations shifted to workers’ quarters and rented rooms at Lee Ling Commercial Centre, Pines Square Batu Kawa and Taman Hui Sing.
