KUALA LUMPUR: The sighting of the new moon of Zulhijjah to determine the date of Hari Raya Aidiladha will take place on the evening of Sunday, May 17.
The Office of the Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal said today (May 8) that the date was set with the consent of His Majesty, Yang di-Pertuan Agong XVII, and the Malay Rulers.
Committees appointed by the Conference of Rulers will conduct the moon sighting at 29 designated locations nationwide, including Pontian in Johor, Tanjung Bidara in Melaka, Kuala Selangor and Banting in Selangor, Pulau Langkawi in Kedah, Kuala Terengganu, Besut and Kemaman in Terengganu, as well as several locations in Sabah, Sarawak, Pahang, Perlis, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
In Sarawak, the designated locations are the Miri Falak Centre at Esplanade Luak in Miri, Teluk Bandung in Kuching, and the Bintulu Falak Centre.
The statement added that the Conference of Rulers had agreed that the determination of the beginning of Zulhijjah would be based on the methods of rukyah (moon sighting) and hisab (astronomical calculations).
The Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal will announce the official date for the beginning of Zulhijjah on the same night through radio and television broadcasts.
