KUCHING: Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd has apologised for the recent water supply disruption affecting residents around the Jalan Wan Alwi area here following an incident linked to the ongoing Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Project construction works.

Sarawak Metro said the disruption occurred after a water pipe was accidentally damaged during construction works for the KUTS Project’s Blue Line Package 2 on Wednesday (May 6).

“We immediately coordinated with the Blue Line Package 2 contractor – a joint venture between Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd and CRBC (M) Holdings Sdn Bhd – as well as Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd to facilitate repair works and restore water supply to the affected area as quickly as possible,” it said in a statement.

Sarawak Metro pointed out that such challenges remain a possibility as construction activities continue to intensify, particularly within urban and residential areas where works involve existing underground utilities and infrastructure systems.

“At Jalan Wan Alwi, ongoing works currently involve the construction of piers for the elevated guideway as well as a long-span structure crossing a major traffic intersection, which is expected to become one of the key features of the KUTS Project,” it said.

Sarawak Metro explained that trial pit works and utility relocation activities are part of the necessary construction process.

It also said utility relocation works in the area are expected to be completed within the next three months, subject to site conditions, coordination requirements and approvals from relevant authorities.

“We remain committed to minimising disruptions to public utility services and surrounding communities as the KUTS Project moves into a more active phase of construction,” it added.

“Moreover, operational procedures are continuously being reviewed and strengthened to improve coordination among contractors, enhance on-site supervision and reduce the risk of similar incidents recurring in the future.”

Sarawak Metro said among the measures being implemented include comprehensive utility mapping, close coordination with utility providers prior to excavation works, continuous site inspections and risk assessments, as well as emergency response readiness for swift mitigation efforts.

“We would like to thank government agencies and utility providers for their cooperation in ensuring the KUTS Project is carried out smoothly and safely.”

At the same time, Sarawak Metro thanked the public for their patience, understanding and continued support as efforts continue towards developing a modern and sustainable public transportation system for Greater Kuching.
