KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has announced the opening of applications for the Kuching South Child Council (KSCC) for the 2026-2028 term, providing opportunity for the voices of children in the community.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng stated that the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) aims to include the participation of children in contributing towards community development.

“I warmly encourage children aged between 12 to 16 years old from across Kuching South to come forward and apply.

”This is an opportunity for young people to share their ideas, represent the voices of children in the community, and contribute towards building a more child-friendly city,” he said during the press conference here today (May 8).

Over the past two years, Child Council members have joined MBKS-led dialogues, programmes, campaigns, and engagement sessions, providing the council perspectives that are affecting children and young people in the city.

The initiative marks MBKS to be the first city in Sarawak, and the second city in Malaysia to obtain the Candidate City Status, reflecting their strong commitment to create a city that respects, protects and fulfills the rights and well-being of every child.

“The Council will consist of 30 members within the age range, representing seven zones in Kuching South, including special quota seats for children from vulnerable and underrepresented groups,” Wee said/

Following that, he also noted that it is not limited to only academically excellent students, as they want the Council to reflect true diversity by including students from different academic levels, socio-economic backgrounds, talents, and also children with disabilities and welfare-supported institutions.

The requirements of applicants must be between 12 to 16 years old who reside or study within Kuching South with guardian consent, show interest in community and child-related issues, have good discipline records, and commit to attend at least 70 per cent of meetings and official programmes to remain active in the Council.

Members appointed to the Child Council will serve for a two-year term and may be considered for reappointment at least once, subject to performance evaluation.

The recruitment process begins today, with applications screened by the Secretariat.

Shortlisted candidates will attend interviews and group assessments conducted by the Selection Panel, before the final list is reviewed by the CFCI Committee and endorsed by the Full Council for official appointment and induction.

Application forms can be downloaded from the official MBKS website or obtained from the Information Counter at MBKS Lobby, Jalan Padungan.

Completed application forms must be submitted before 4pm on May 28 2026 to MBKS’ Public Relations and Corporate Development Unit or emailed to request@mbks.gov.my

On another note, MBKS also held a prize presentation ceremony for the Poster Competition themed ‘My Grandparents, My Heart, My Hero’, which used art as a message of love and appreciation.

Wee noted that the theme is important because as part of the CFCI Action Plan, MBKS wanted to instil in the city children a sense of compassion, caring and respectful.

“At the same time, our Ageing Action Plan hopes to build a city where older persons are respected, appreciated, and never forgotten, a city where our elderly can continue to feel loved, included, and valued,” he added.
