KUCHING: Sarawak will require more highly skilled workers in emerging industries such as aerospace and chip manufacturing as the state accelerates its economic transition agenda towards 2030 and beyond.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the growing number of job vacancies in the state reflected stronger economic performance and increasing demand for specialised talent.
He said Sarawak must continue strengthening its workforce through training, upskilling and higher education to meet future industry demands.
“We saw earlier that there are many job vacancies in Sarawak, which means our economy has improved in terms of performance.
“We also need workers with various skills, including those who have undergone training and upskilling programmes, as well as highly qualified individuals such as PhD holders,” he told reporters after the state-level Labour Day celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching today (May 10).
Abang Johari said sectors currently being explored by the state government, including aerospace and chip-related industries, would create demand for a more technically skilled workforce.
“This includes sectors such as aerospace, which we are currently studying, as well as the chip industry. This will certainly create demand for skilled workers in those fields,” he said.
He also commended workers in Sarawak for their contributions and praised the strong cooperation between the government, employers and employees.
Abang Johari said the collaboration had helped strengthen the state’s labour ecosystem and support Sarawak’s long-term economic development goals.
