KUCHING: Discussions on the upcoming Sarawak state election remain premature despite speculation sparked by remarks from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, on a possible state political move.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said it was still too early to discuss the matter in detail when asked by reporters about Nanta’s statement.

“We have not reached that stage yet,” he told reporters after the state-level Labour Day celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching today (May 10).

When pressed further on whether discussions had already taken place, Abang Johari said there was no need to rush into the matter.

“The engine has not even started yet, so there is no need to rush,” he said.

The remarks came after Nanta reportedly hinted at the possibility of continuing his political career at the state level should the opportunity arise and party leadership approve it.

Nanta, who has served as Member of Parliament for Kapit for nearly three decades, reportedly said he was prepared to leave federal politics if selected to contest in the state election.

The Works Minister also said the party already had succession plans for the Kapit parliamentary seat.

Meanwhile, when jokingly asked whether the state election could take place after Gawai Dayak, Abang Johari laughed before replying: “When do you think is good?”
