KUCHING: Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng took time out today to salute hawkers for the services they render to the community here.
Kuching South City Hall (MBKS), which he heads, threw them a luncheon to honour their contributions to the local community and economy.
“Hawkers have long been overlooked for their contributions to our daily life, from waking up early in the morning to preparing their stalls.
“Their prices are also reasonable and allow for negotiation with pricing, showing the community spirit together,” he said at the MBKS Community Market and Hawker Reunion Luncheon at Stutong Market.
He said that traditional wet markets serve as a platform that brings people together, where vendors recommend recipes, suggest suitable ingredients for specific dishes, and offer a wide variety of fresh produce.
“When communities get to know each other, they would get to know the vendors and can gather while sharing valuable information together in a place of livelihood,” he said.
MBKS, he said, acknowledged the markets within its jurisdiction and highlighted efforts to maintain, upgrade and evolve the future of markets through its “Love Your Markets” campaign.
Wee noted that one of the initiatives to sustain the market is by reducing rental rates to help traders continue contributing to the community.
“Once they are able to sustain their businesses, they can continue supplying ingredients for our daily meals while supporting the growth of the community and the city, creating a chain reaction.
“We remember your contributions, sacrifices, time, and effort, so this small gathering is a way for us to show our respect and appreciation for all your hard work,” he said.
