Sarawak is projected to produce one tonne of hydrogen per day by the first quarter of 2027 as it advances its push to become a regional clean energy powerhouse.
Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the target forms part of a phased development strategy under the state’s hydrogen roadmap.
He said output is expected to increase to two tonnes per day by 2029 and remain at that level by 2032.
“Our approach is structured and phased, focusing on strengthening the entire hydrogen value chain — from production to midstream processing, domestic utilisation and future export opportunities.

“The state government is also stimulating domestic demand through catalyst projects such as the Kuching Urban Transportation System, which will use hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit and feeder buses,” he said.
He said this during the question-and-answer session in response to a query from Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How on the outlook of Sarawak’s hydrogen drive and progress in securing long-term buyers.
Hazland said developments such as the Kuching Low Carbon Gas Hub and Sarawak Petchem’s low-carbon methanol project are strengthening the state’s position in securing long-term international offtake agreements.
He said Sarawak is balancing export ambitions with efforts to grow domestic demand while building local capabilities.
