The Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) must be equipped with stronger powers, structures and capabilities to continue driving Sarawak’s economic development strategically and sustainably.

Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine said SEDC plays a vital role in planning, implementing and coordinating various economic development activities that benefit the people while strengthening Sarawak’s overall economic position.

He said the proposed Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2026 allowing the corporation to establish offices and agencies across various divisions in Sarawak is a positive step towards improving the delivery of economic development plans to grassroots communities.

“This amendment is not merely focused on rebranding, but symbolises a major transformation in Sarawak’s economic development direction — one that is mature, forward-looking and centred on the future of the region while ensuring the harmony and wellbeing of the people,” he said when debating in support of the Bill during the DUN sitting today (May 12).

Royston said the amendment reflects the Sarawak government’s commitment to ensuring that the state’s economic development institution remains relevant and prepared to face increasingly complex global economic challenges.

“We can clearly see how Sarawak today has emerged as one of the most progressive regions in Malaysia through various strategic initiatives implemented under the visionary leadership of the Premier,” he added.

He said one of the key strengths of the amendment is its effort to strengthen the corporation’s corporate governance structure by involving individuals with broad expertise and experience in strategic fields.

According to him, such an approach is crucial as today’s economic landscape can no longer rely solely on conventional methods.

“Instead, it requires a professional, efficient and transparent administrative system built on diverse expertise,” he said.

Royston said the involvement of government administrators, financial and legal experts, as well as professionals from various sectors, would ensure that strategic decisions made by the corporation are of higher quality, more credible and capable of delivering significant impact on Sarawak’s economic development.

He added that Sarawak is no longer merely a producer of raw resources, but is transforming into a modern economic region that emphasises high-value industries, green technology, innovation and sustainable development.
