Beyond politics and public service, Pakan assemblyman Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom is a man who appreciates simple pleasures in life, from sentimental music and golf to spending time with people from all walks of life.

In a relaxed and candid interview, he opened up about his hobbies, favourite songs, food preferences, daily routine and the life principles that continue to shape his journey today.

He believes living closely with people, appreciating sentimental music and maintaining simple values are among the principles guiding his life until today.

In this interview with Sarawak Tribune, he shares his personal interests, reflections on life beyond politics and his hopes for the continued development of his constituency.

Question: What are your hobbies during your free time?

I enjoy spending my free time playing golf and listening to music, especially songs with soft and melodic elements that help me relax. I am actually a golfer. That is my first hobby. When there is a suitable time, I also enjoy singing.

Question: What kind of songs do you enjoy listening to?

Among my favourite songs are sentimental classics by Elvis Presley, particularly the timeless hit Can’t Help Falling in Love. I enjoy listening to Cliff Richard and local legendary singer Syarifah Aini. Their music is calming and soothing depending on the mood and time of day.

Question: Can you share your favourite food?

I love  sour dishes, especially “masak asam”, umai and spicy meals served with chilli.  Everything must be asam. Of course with chilli. Without chilli, there is no taste.

Question: Can you share your daily routine?

Despite my busy schedule, I enjoy interacting with people and dislike being alone. Socialising and connecting with others have always been important parts of my life. I cannot be by myself. I like congregating, interacting and mixing with people. I also spend time following geopolitical developments and current issues through my phone.

Question: What life principle have you continued to hold on to over the years?

It is very important to care for others and help people in need whenever possible. If I have extra money and I see individuals in difficulty, I hope I can help as much as I can.

Question: What advice would you give to young people?

They have to balance technology use with education and self-development – social media can be beneficial if used wisely.

Youths today are heavily influenced by gadgets and online platforms, but should not neglect reading, revision and preparing themselves for the future.

Young people must understand their surroundings and appreciate the guidance from parents and elders. From there, they can continue building themselves and grow. Reflecting on my life journey, my background is simple and I remain comfortable interacting with people from all walks of life regardless of age or background. That has always been my life. I hope to continue living this way for as long as I can.
